FRIDAY ACTIVITY REPORT
FRIDAY’s at K.R. Mangalam World School, Gurgaon are so much fun!The first Friday Activity of the new session 2016-17 began with great zeal and enthusiasm. The corridors’ were filled with gleeful cheers by the students andthe atmosphere was filled with much exuberance.The warm smiles of the children illuminated the aura of the allotted venuesand their gleaming eyes were super excited and looked forwardtotheir chosen activities to begin. It was a great beginning, indeed! Please find below the reports for Friday Activities held in the month of April and May.
Indian Dance: With lots of enthusiasmthis activity started with basic introduction of Indian Dance form. Children performed ‘’Pranam’’ post which they did warm – up session of neck, shoulder and waist workouts. Children were explained the concept of patriotism. ‘Jai- ho ‘ a popular song was chosen for the same. All the children enjoyed learning formations and steps. The song had a euphoric melody which significantly uplifted their moods. The activity ended on an excited note with ‘pranam’ at the end. In the next session, the students were given basic introduction of folk dances like Punjabi, Rajasthani, Haryanvi etc. ‘Aari -aari ‘ a popular song was chosen by the students and dance steps were practiced on it. The session ended with the ‘pranam’. The activity was performed with lots of fun and excitement.
Western Dance: Activities plays a very important role in the holistic development of a child keeping this thing in mind K. R. Mangalam World School conducts various activities. Western Dance (Friday) activity of the session 2016-17 started with a great enthusiasm. Students were taught different steps for example: Parallel feet, Turn outs, stretching of the body, chest isolation and hip isolation.
Teachers choreographed the students on the song “Shaam Shaandar”. Students learned all the steps with great excitement. It was indeed an amazing activity enjoyed by all the students.
Kitchen Science: Activity termed as ‘Ice-cream in a bag’ was conducted. The kids were given ingredients like milk, Vanilla Essence, Sugar, rock-salt and ice. They were told to put the same in their zip bags as per the process. They worked accordingly and shaked it for around 20-25 minutes. Kids were so overwhelmed when the final product was ready. They had the ice-cream and enjoyed it immensely.
Dramatics:Students were givenan insight about the idea of dramatics and theatre.The drama lessons were divided into three broad topics, each one providing a range of exciting lessons, activities and games. They were briefed about Physical Expressions and Verbal Expressions.Students were facilitated to create their own scripts through collaboration; helping them to build confidence self-esteem and enhancing social and communication skills. Students were divided into groups of four and were given chance to enact scenarios and role plays of famous personalities like: Narendra Modi, Amitabh Bacchan, Mother Teresa and many more. In the next week activity, students were motivated to enact different roles of community helpers like Doctor, Teacher, Plumber, Vegetable Vendor, Electrician, Soldier, Engineer and many more. Students came up with creative and innovative ideas and they performed with greatenthusiasm. Usage of Props made the class interesting thereby adding a dramatic element to their theme. Friday activity of Craft’s Empire was held on 13th May 2016.
Clay Modeling: Basic information about the ‘Clay Modeling’ activity was shared with the students. In the first activity children sculpted a flower vase model. In the second activity they were introduced to the painting aspects of the flower vase model that was sculpted. Children were allowed to let their imagination flow as they painted the flower vase using their own ideas of color combinations. The entire arena was filled with enthusiasm and the little hands at work as our young artists painted using their own artistryand ideas.At the end of the activity, the creativity of the children could be witnessed in form of a number of colorful and beautiful flower vases laid in front of us. The students were curious to carry their self-made and self-painted master pieces.
Vedic Mathematics: Vedic Mathematics, the mental activity helps the brain to solve calculations mentally and is very useful for the health of brain. In the first class, the students practiced to calculate the multiplication of two digit numbers with a single digit number mentally. As many of the students were able to do it mentally, they were all amazed with the new form of mental Maths and found it easy and playful. The second class of Vedic Maths started with the quiz which was based on the technique taught in the previous class. The class was divided into two teams – Team A and Team B. Children were asked to calculate the simple multiplication of two digit numbers mentally. Children were excited to give answers. Both the teams performed very well but Team B was won over with few points. The session was extremely interactive.Children were enthusiastically participating and were confident enough to do the sums mentally. The class ended with the revision of tables.
Vocal Music:In the vocal music activity, the music teacher started the session with the introduction of the ‘Alankars ’, also called as Sargam .The importance of learning these alankars or the repeated notes was also being taught to the students as they will be of great use in forming the Ragas .The students were highly elated to practice the notes on the Harmonium and sang very well on the very first day. The second session of the activity started with a brief recapitulation of the Alankars learnt in the first class followed by the introduction of a new prayer ‘Hum TereNanhePujari’. The students wrote the lyrics in their Music notebooks and sang it in chorus after their teacher. They also sang it individually and were corrected to the perfection of the notes.
Tabla:Tabla class for the new session started with a lot of excitement and zeal. Students were thrilled to touch the instrument and understand how to use it. Students were introduced with the basic details about using the instrument, the basic notes and Rhythm and hand movements. The facilitator gave a demo and then students were made to try their hands on table and repeat the beats. Students learnt the basic beats properly and were made to practice the beats.
Fireless Cookery: In the first session, the students prepared a refreshing AamPanna andmouth wateringChholeChat. This cooling mango drink was an instant hit. It was slightly sour and sweet so they just loved it. The students were explained about the benefits of AamPanna as how it prevents from heat stroke andkeeps the body cool. Both the recipes were easy to prepare and students were involved through-out. In the next session, the students prepared a scrumptious dish which was indeed easy to cook and tasted delicious! The main ingredients used werebread and curd. It’s a perfect summer breakfast, with curd for cooling effect. Initially, students had cut the bread slices into round shape, using acircle shaped lid. They whipped the yogurt until it became smooth. Salt and sugar were added. Then bread slice was dipped in yogurt one at a time and the product was arrangedin serving plates. Finely chopped cashewnuts were spread all over with another slice of bread. Finally, students garnished it with cumin powder and chopped coriander. Bread dahivada was then ready to serve and eat. Children tasted the dish and loved the chatpata bread dahivada.
Aerobic: The activity started with a warm up session.Students given an introduction about the activity and were made to do some basic exercises. Post that they did segment-II skills. They learnt four unique steps according to the Rhythm. These includedshoulder stretch, hand stretch, wrist stretch and leg stretch. Students have been given a task which they will practice at home during their vacations. Students were also taught seven important skills on slow music which they did collectively. Every skill was changed after 16 counts. Overall, class was full of energy and enthusiasm.
Skating–The activity began with the warm-up exercises. Students were made to do practice of round crossing which was taught to them in their regular classes. After the round crossing students were taught standing and crossing techniques. Students took keen interest in learning the techniques.The next session began with exercises like running and jumping. Then the students were made to practice some of the basic steps of skating. Afterthat students practiced what they had learnt earlier. Then students were taught zigzag and round crossing techniques which they enjoyed a lot. Students took keen interest in practicing these techniques and thoroughly enjoyed the complete session of the activity.
Taek-Won-Do –Taekwondo is an exciting activity which students look forward to.It started with the warm up exercises of – jumping, stretching, rotating neck, shoulder and waist stimulations. It improvises their physical coordination, flexibility, balance and mental acumen. Students started with warm up exercises of – running, stretching, Crocodile Walk and Frog Race. All these exercises help to build up student’s stamina.Under the expert guidance they practiced taekwondo basic techniques likeMiddle Punch, Middle Block, kicking and punching. The facilitator emphasized on moral development as well. Students learnt how to respect themselves and others and increase their concentration and self-discipline.
Nature and Eco:The club began with great enthusiasm. The topic chosen for the first activity was SEED GERMINATION. The activity started with discussion on different ways of plant germination. A power point presentation related to the topic was shown to the students, which included explanation with photos of different stages of plants growing through seeds, stems, roots and leaves. Then the students were taken to the ground to sow the sprouted seeds (kidney beans, green grams, pea, beans etc.) in the soil. With help of the gardener the students were made to sow seeds. The activity was really interesting. The students were happy to sow the seeds themselves which they will see growing with time. This gave them an enriching practical knowledge of seed germination. The activity ended with a question answer round which included MCQ’s related to the topic.
Personality Grooming: The activity was initiated with the help of another sub activity named as “Discover yourself”. Each student came forward to introduce and express his/her personal thoughts on desires, strengths, weaknesses, family love, school fun etc. It was a motivational ice breaking session for them which was followed by a memory game on recalling each other’s aspirations. The next session on Personality Grooming was based on emotions. Students shared their emotional statesincluding happiness, grief, anger, fright, confusion, shock and many more. Each one was given a chit which gave a particular situation to enact upon. This experience of strong emotions which is an integral part of personality grooming directed the students towards self-awareness and confidence.
Block Printing: The students were briefed about the blocks and their usage. In first activity, students made Mother’s Day card using blocks. At the onset, they were given the A4 sheets on which students wrote “Happy Mother’s Day”. They also wrote a few lines thanking their mothers. Each student made use ofthe blocks,brushes and fabric colors.They were told about how they could use the clocks for making unique designs.A ‘wall hanging’ as a piece of art was the agenda for the next session. The sample was shown to them and the method was explained thoroughly. Students were given different shapes of patterns. Then they did the outline and block printing with acrylic paints. Students were coming up with their own ideas and they used blocks like elephant blocks etc. After block printing, students decorated the shapes with glitter. Then they tied all the shapes with colorful ribbons and created a beautiful wall hanging. Students were extremely happy to do this activity.
Chess: The students were taught practically about the rules and moves of the game. They were shown and made to understand the following rules of the game: “The king moves two squares towards the Rook. The Rook moves onto the square that the king has just crossed’’. The students were also explained about “En-Passant” rule through practical demonstration. After that students were given chess set. They enjoyed playing the game and used the rule and move taught in the class.
Craft’s Empire:This month’s Craft’s empire activity aimed at teaching the technique of ‘Paper Quilling’ – the art of rolling, shaping and gluing paper together. It also aimed at making students aware of various quilling tools and various shapes involved in the quilling method. Quilling is a paper art that requires a lot of concentration and patience.The activity started with rolling a strip of paper into a coil and then pinching the coil into shapes that can be glued together. With Mother’s day approaching, the students made a card for their mothers, a beautiful card using the quilling technique.
Table Tennis: The tennis coach started the session with some warm up exercises like stretching, flexibility, neck exercises, shoulder exercises, running etc. Children were told about the back hand push and forehand push. They learned and practiced both the pushes and it was a wonderful learning sessionfor them.
Paper Folding: Students made a beautiful paper folder using the art of folding, shaping and gluing strips and paper together to create decorative designs. Transforming a piece of plain paper into something useful was truly enjoyed and appreciated. Students preserved their folders for keeping their holiday homework, travel itineraries and vacation photos in it. Students were excited as this could be also used as thoughtfully designed gifts which many people would appreciate. The classes aimed at giving various tips to the students on how to utilize the available resources in the best possible manner and create beautiful and creative crafts.
